In media production clipping describes the separation of an object from its background on the pixel level.

The desired image area is precisely defined and can be adjusted easily at any time.

Masking refers to the separation of different image elements.

These can be individually adjusted, moved, deleted (retouching/composing), re-colored or placed on a new background.

Alpha Masking

Alpha channels are used to separate complex objects that have contours with varying degrees of sharpness, contrast and transparency allowing the user to adjust color in such objects or to combine them with a new background. This is accomplished with a combination of pen and brush tools, using delicate paint and brushwork.
